Louis H. Sullivan biography by masa kim
Early life
Louis Sullivan was born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 3, 1856. Louis's parents were both immigrant, his father was from Ireland and his mother was from Switzerland. Until the age of five Louis lived with mother, father, aunt, uncle, and grandmother. Members of the family spoke French, German, and Gaelic; also, they were skilled at dance, playing musical instrument, and drawing. His love of nature developed after when his grandparents bought a farm in Wakefield, Massachusetts because he spent summers and entire school years in the country. Louis also learned to appreciate urban life and architecture when he was exploring Boston with his father on foot. When he was 11 years old he decided to become an architect so he stayed with his grandparents in Boston when his family moved to Chicago in 1868. When Louis had to attend school it was 20 mile round trip, he graduated Rice Grammar School 1870. When Louis was junior in English High he was bored of school. So he applied for early admission to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for Building and Architecture program in 1872. He passed rigorous battery of test and was accepted to the school without high school diploma. But he dropped out of the college on June of 1873 because MIT program was modeled by Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris which was too traditional and didn't concern that much about social and architectural theory. After he dropped out of the college he moved to Philadelphia and took a job from architect Frank Furness. But the Depression of 1873 made hard for Furness to keep Louis so he had to let him go. When Louis moved to Chicago he worked with William LeBaron Jenney, who was credited for the first steel frame building. After a year with Jenney Louis moved to Paris to study at Ecole des Beaux Arts. But once again after a year of studying in Paris he returned to Chicago and worked as draftsman for Joseph S. Johnston & John Edelman. On April 14, 1924 Louis Sullivan died in the hotel room in Chicago.
